Departments, divisions, centers, programs — internal structures that make sense to administrators but mean nothing to a patient who just received a diagnosis.
Northwestern Medicine made a deceptively simple but strategically brilliant choice: they created a global navigation item called Conditions & Services. On the surface, combining conditions with clinical services into a single menu section does not sound revolutionary. But it reflects a fundamental insight that most health systems have missed.
Patients don’t search for care by department name.
They search by diagnosis.
A person told they have esophageal cancer is not going to look for “Gastrointestinal Oncology” — they are going to search for “esophageal cancer.” By building an A-Z directory of condition names and then using the CMS’s tagging system to connect each condition to its related treatment programs, specialists, care centers, clinical trials, support groups, and educational content, Northwestern created a wayfinding system that actually mirrors how patients think. Each condition hub becomes a single destination where a prospective patient can find everything the system offers for their specific diagnosis — without having to understand how the hospital is organized internally.
The rest of the site executes with equal intelligence. The homepage opens with a dramatic purple abstract hero and a prominent tri-tab search bar that lets users search by doctor, location, or across the entire site by specialty, condition, treatment, or name. Doctor profiles are rich and transparent, featuring star ratings from real patients, video introductions, insurance verification, Practice Focus Areas that link back to conditions, and nearest location displays. The Find a Doctor results page offers filtering by location, insurance carrier, and specialty with distance-sorted results and inline rating counts. A “What Makes Us Better” section on the homepage showcases patient success stories and medical breakthroughs through immersive photography and video.
Northwestern Medicine claims to be a health organization centered around the patient.
The way they have designed their digital experience proves they really are.
